Walking into Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World is like walking into a huge
toy box of broken toys and dolls. The place would seem scary if it weren't
so fascinating. What visitors are actually seeing are bits and pieces of
Mardi Gras floats, movie-set pieces and sculpted characters made for the
various Mardi Gras parades and other attractions.
Heads and figures are made in one or two ways. Some are sculpted in
clay, then are used as molds and filled with fiberglass or papier-
mâché'. Others are sculpted in foam, and then painted. Floats are
created with wood and cloth and are mounted on steel chassis on rubber tires.
Even those who never plan to go to the real Mardi Gras would probably
like visiting Mardi Gras World. After all, how often do you get to see
Spiderman, Marilyn, Scarlett and Rhett all in the same room?
